Homemade Mexican Horchata

Recipe for Horchata

Homemade Mexican horchata, yum! I have such a weak spot for this delicious Mexican drink.

Growing up in a border town in south Texas, I have tried many horchata drinks in my lifetime, and each time I absolutely love it all over again.

Horchata is made up primarily using rice, sugar, cinnamon and different types of milk. You will find many different recipes when you do a search, and they are all great. I’m about to show you my way of making it. I make this drink for parties, for myself, and for my family. This drink is a treat to make in our kitchen, and such a refreshing, smooth drink. Serve it over ice and you have a delicious cinnamon milk drink.

How Do I Make Horchata?

I will say it is a pretty easy drink to make. There isn’t a lot of steps to making Mexican horchata. The hardest part is the wait. You have to soak the rice first. I will say for a minimum of six hours, preferably overnight. I have even seen a recipe where you fry the rice first. Personally, I don’t do that extra step and it comes out just as good.

Horchata Recipe

There are many different ways people make horchata, this is just my way and my family loves it. But, you can always add more, take away more and make it your own. I have seen people put more sweetened condensed milk, more or less sugar, even raisins.

That is the beauty of cooking and making you recipes. You get to put your own spin on things and make it your own.

I hope you enjoy this recipe! Horchata is a rich and flavorful drink! It is definitely festive and every time I make it, it is always a crowd pleaser. I have even seen people add coconut rum to this! I have not tried that myself, but it is definitely on my list of things to do, lol.
