Living with ADHD

Living with Adult ADHD

Looking back on the past 9 years, it all seems so clear. All the symptoms, warnings, comments, and everything in between pointed to the one thing I did not know at the time. I felt so confused, lost, I didn’t have the help I needed.

Diagnosed with ADHD

Living with ADHD

I had lived with brain fog for years. I struggled with concentrating on anything for more than five minutes at a time. I used post-it notes everywhere and I always felt scatterbrained. I tried all the things, but nothing really worked. I had feelings of exhaustion, chronic stress, sleep problems, forgetfulness, overwhelming emotions, and just my overall inability to truly focus on anything for an extended period. I was so frustrated!

I began to have low self-esteem because I thought something was wrong with me. Was I not getting enough quality sleep? Was I not eating the right foods? Was I just not that smart? Why were the people around me, not like me? My self-esteem took a huge hit and I felt inadequate around my husband, coworkers, and peers.

My desk was the only one that had hot pink post-it notes everywhere. I depended on those post-it notes heavily to remind me of what I needed to do. I knew I was different from my coworkers, since I had the only desk that adorned sticky notes everywhere, but I just didn’t fully understand how and why.

One day my boss came over and told me, “You know, you have a lot of post-it notes everywhere. You really need to learn how to remember things in your brain.” I was crushed. Devastated. Humiliated. What was I going to do now that my go-to was not good enough?

Personal Life

ADHD and Personal Life

Home life was the same. I was constantly distracted and could not remember simple things to do. I was a full-time student and new wife, and I just couldn’t snap out of these overwhelming feelings. It wasn’t until my husband finally told me I needed to see a doctor, and I listened.

After my doctor’s visit I was diagnosed with adult ADHD. I felt such an extreme relief that I finally had an answer! I finally knew what was happening to me and there was help. However, I only wish I had help sooner. I wish I knew where to turn to sooner. I wouldn’t have suffered as long as I did if I only had a resource to understand everything better.

Sound Familiar?

More to ADHD

I wish I had available help at my fingertips at the time. Thankfully, this doesn’t have to be YOUR story. We are all neurodiverse, and that is OK!

Did you know that there are many people living with ADHD that don’t know they have it? According to MoretoADHD.com, it is one of the most common psychiatric conditions. It is 75-90% even more probable to have it if a member of your family has it. That is substantial!

What is even more shocking is that there is a significant lack of awareness around what ADHD symptoms could look like! This was my situation too – I didn’t know what they were myself.

ADHD can be mischaracterized as disorganized, distracted, overwhelmed or a lack of motivation. Alternatively, individuals can potentially also be diagnosed with a comorbidity (e.g., anxiety or depression) and may not receive an accurate ADHD diagnosis. This can further exacerbate symptoms for comorbidities and make it harder to understand and manage ADHD.

According to MoretoADHD.com, as many as 87% of adults with ADHD also have a psychiatric condition. I am one of them, I am also diagnosed with General Anxiety Disorder.

Thankfully, there are resources now that can help. MoretoADHD.com can guide you to learning about the intricacies of living with ADHD and all the important factors, all at your fingertips. Thank you for sharing your story. I think when people are not diagnosed as children, this is not something that occurs to them as the issue. I have a few friends that were diagnosed as adults, but it took some time to figure it out. With kids it seems to be a faster diagnosis.

I, too, have ADHD with a generalized anxiety disorder! It wasn’t diagnosed until I was an adult!
