Texas Beer Co
Texas Beer Co is a locally owned and operated brewery in the small town of Taylor, TX, just an hour northeast of Austin, TX. It was founded in 2015 by owners Ian Davis and JD Gins. They are a people-powered brewery that had it’s beginnings as a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, and now have grown and expanded to the amazing Texas company that it is today. With an impressive selection of craft beer and their beautiful Texas Beer Co Taproom located at 201 N Main Street, this is a beer to surely make its way into your heart, your cart, and your Texas destination!
Texas Beer Co. Brewery Tour
I had the amazing opportunity to have a guided tour of the brewery by Founder & Brewmaster JD Gins. Passionate, knowledgeable, and a visionary, he gave me the grand tour of where the magic happens at this brewery. Water, grain, yeast, hops and some special ingredients all come together here to make an array of delicious, handcrafted one of a kind beer that will make you want to try them all. Each beer vibrant in taste and totally delicious on their own.
At it’s inception, Taylor, TX did not have a brewery, and with a name like Texas Beer Co., it was a perfect place to set up shop!
Award Winning Beer
J.D. Gins, a true beer connoisseur along with his Assistant Brewer Max, won the gold medal at the 2018 Great American Beer Festival with their Pecos Amber Lager.
The beer lover’s dream, this place is the real deal. These tanks are not even all of them, they are actually in the middle of an expansion. After these pictures were taken, they had more (yes, more!) new 60BBL fermenters and a centrifuge added to the brew house! Check out their Facebook post to see the exciting addition in action!
Their silo which holds the bulk grains is prominent at the front of the location (pictured in the beginning with JD Gin). It is very cool to see in person and is functional too, as in it holds all the bulk grains for the beers. Crystal malts, specialty grains and an assortment of ingredients add to the visual spectacularness (is that a word?) of this local brewery.
Brewing Beer- A Science and an Art
The tour consisted of a detailed process of the beer, from the silo which holds the grain, milling the grain, all the way to canning and distribution. You get to see the grist case, which holds the grains after the milling process and learn about mash, boilers, steam powered brewery processes, valves, hot water tanks, cold water tanks, fermenters, whirlpools and so much more. It is truly a fascinating experience!
The brewery comes alive with the science of beer here with sugar breakdowns, long form and short form proteins, mashing, enzyme breakdowns, separations, sugar breakdowns…..it is absolutely amazing what goes into this award winning beer.

There is another wonderful side to Texas Beer Co and that is their amazing Taproom. Nestled in the heart of the downtown Historic Taylor district (201 N Main St), their taproom presence has inspired a downtown revitalization.
Filled with their amazing beer, beer to go options, growlers, and guest taps, the Texas Beer Co Taproom brings vitality back into the Taylor historic downtown district.
Texas Day Trip Destination
It is a great day trip for central Texans and just an hour drive for Austinites who want to get a feel for a unique destination experience at only an hour away. It is a great option to get away from the city vibe and visit a smaller town with a wonderful brewery and taproom to offer.
